Our story

FOLLOWING THE CLOUD

Our church has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to its establishment many years ago. The roots of our church can be traced back to 1984, when a small group of dedicated individuals came together with a common vision and purpose. We know that none of this is possible without Jesus being the center and His hand blessing this work. Over the years our church has grown from a humble beginnings to a thriving congregation. We're excited for you to join the story too.

FOLLOWING THE CLOUD

We would be thrilled to have you here and would like to share with you what it's like to attend on a typical Sunday. As you step into our church, you will be greeted by warm smiles. Our Sunday services are a time of worship and spiritual growth. Our church is a place where families can connect, friendships can blossom, and lives can be transformed. So, if you are searching for a place to worship and belong, we invite you to experience our vibrant and welcoming church.

Our start

In 1984, a small group of believers led by a layman began meeting at a home and later felt impressed to plant a new church in Katy. Upon receiving the approval from their denomination, Mason Road Assembly of God was launched.

Our first building

In 1991, after a few years renting and meeting at a storefront, the young congregation took a bold step of faith, purchased a burned-out, former Ford used car dealership and transformed it into a church. Later, a new pastor arrived and the church continued to grow.

Eventually, they built a sanctuary on the same 1.6-acre property and changed their name to Family Life Assembly of God (FLAG). At the time, their parking area only accommodated 60 vehicles. Additional parking was permitted by adjacent businesses on Sundays when they were closed. Children’s ministries and classrooms were accommodated by a couple of trailers at the back of the property.

In 2004, the Lord sent Pastor Albert & Rebekah Cortez to serve as senior pastors. They brought fresh vision and faith-infused leadership to the church. Soon after, Pastor Cortez reactivated the missions program with the launching of the first annual missions convention. He taught the congregation that a “Giving church is a living church” and reminded them of the special word from the Lord, “If you sow abroad, you will reap at home”.

Since then, FLAG has experienced gracious growth, both numerically and spiritually, with many souls saved and lives transformed. Also, numerous new ministries have been birthed, pastoral team added, missions program expanded (over 70 missionaries and ministries are supported financially each month), and a Spanish-language church launched.

Our current location

In 2008, FLAG purchased 8 beautiful acres of undeveloped land in a strategic location in south Katy near Cinco Ranch, and just minutes from the Grand Parkway (Highway 99), Interstate 10 and Westpark Tollway. They selected a large rock from the property, and during a special on-site dedication service, anointed it with oil as a reminder that it was God’s property. Despite a slumping economy, FLAG fully paid off the property in a little over 4 years. To the glory of God!

After placing their Mason Road property for sale on the real estate market, they patiently waited 3 years before finding a buyer. A non-profit theatre purchased this property, and agreed to allow FLAG to remain as tenants while their new facilities were being built.

On Saturday morning, December 19, 2015, a large crowd of excited FLAG members gathered together on the 8 acre property to celebrate the groundbreaking of their new church facilities. It took a little over a year to construct the new facilities due to permit challenges and weather-related delays.

FLAG celebrated the grand opening of their new church building on Sunday, January 29, 2017.

The new 23,000 square feet facility features a 400-seat sanctuary, spacious lobby, office suite, nursery suite, kid’s church, youth room/chapel, commercial kitchen and numerous classrooms. There is a large covered outdoor playground that is fenced, and 200 parking spaces. The design style of the facilities can best be described as “cathedral meets contemporary”.

In the meantime, FLAG is looking forward to continuing to impact the Greater Katy Area with the good news of Jesus Christ and advance the kingdom of God.
